GOLD NIGHTS OUT

Gold Nights Out

Gold Nights Out by sophia2a

What to wear come Saturday night, I hear you ask?

Why, red, black and gold of course.

And why not throw in a stripe of blue, because it's the freak'n weekend after all. The Moschino belt may be a little overkill for some people's likings (mine included) but you can't say that I don't fully embrace a theme now can ya? A slick of lipstick in place of a head because lipstick smudges become your personal calling card come nightfall, not in any form of seduction, merely as a means of marking one's territory, or at least claiming ownership over whose drink is whose - never make the mistake of sharing shades, there will always be one who drinks faster and thus become head drink swindler. Or maybe this is just my friends... Pile on the bangles because, well there's no reason necessary for this one and a watch is always useful, if not wholly necessary, for looking like you're punctual at all times, even when the opposite is true (in my case). Finish with a bag that comes with instructions of use sewn on to it, a dusting of bronzer, a voilà, c'est finis.

Blisters accrued from atrocious dancing in above amazing stilettos are inevitable but what are a few cuts in the name of a good night eh?!

7 THINGS THAT I WISH WERE IN MY WARDROBE RIGHT NOW

Bright Things On A Rainy Day by sophia2a

Doing the rounds on Facebook at the moment is: 'Tell me 7 Facts About Yourself'. Now 'fun' things like this, in still in me the same dread that I feel when I'm faced with filling in the 'tell me a bit about yourself' section of a job application, or 'selling' myself when writing up my CV. It's hard when you're pretty much the poster girl for the average twenty-something to think of anything defining about yourself.

As I've mentioned before, I'm pretty chatty (or more pointedly, babble-some) which means that unless it's especially cringe-worthy, everyone I've ever met probably already knows about it. I'm just a sucker for panic-blurting in an exasperated fit to fend off the dreaded 'awkward silence', which makes my joining in with the above Facebook motion a rather moot one.

However, to soothe my self-imposed exclusion from this club, I thought that I'd write up '7 Things That I Wish Were In My Wardrobe Right Now'. Clever, right?
(I definitely wouldn't mind a view like this)

I'm not sure about where you are in the world right now, but the skies over Wales resemble the muggy water of an artist after cleaning all of their paint brushes in it. To distract me from these moody, threatening skies, I have decided that I need some colour in my life; something that you'd swear I had an aversion to if you looked in my wardrobe right now. So 'thing I wish was in my wardrobe' number 1, would have to be, well, a whole new wardrobe, preferably the combined closets of Cher Horowitz, Dionne Davenport and Elle Woods. Yes, apparently colour to me involves resembling a mash up of bubblegum pop, candy floss and a children's tv presenter. But hey, I'm willing to try anything to fend off these winter blues.
(The Coveteur has got me coveting again...)

The second item that I do so wish was mine, should more correctly be referred to in the plural sense, as in items. I wish - like most people, I'm sure - that I had a shoe collection to rival that of Carrie Bradshaw's, preferably stocked full with Sophia Webster creations. Not only is she in good company with a name like that (lol), but her shoes are undeniably high-fashion yet humorous. They're made for the sartorially aware who don't take themselves too seriously, so yeah, they're totally made for me, right? One day I will own a pair, and when I do, I don't know whether I'll wear them or frame them...
(The pout that inspired a thousand rumours)

So this one isn't technically a wardrobe-want, more a skill that I'd like to acquire. Lately, what was once a concern of the older generation staving off their receding lips, has become an area of great focus for every woman, totally irregardless of age. With the youngest of the Jenner/Kardashian siblings spawning speculation over her inflated lips and Khloe's pillow pout growing almost as quickly as her derriere (seems like everyone is chasing the Kim K booty!), lips are the feature of focus at the moment. Which leads me to numero tres: I wish I could pencil in a pout. I feel like lipstick is such a commitment but I would so love to be able to slick it on nonchalantly, without even a glance in the mirror. Whilst I'm not sure I'll ever get to the 'no mirror-check' stage, I live in hope.
(Turtle-neck and orange to boot. Uh, need it!)

As an avid fashion guzzler, I'm embarrassed to admit that I do not own a polo neck! However, this one will be rectified imminently, if not for bonus points on the fashion richter scale, then to fend off the threat of pneumonia!
(Proof that together orange & navy create an ensemble worth lusting after)

The sixth in my list is a slight side note to my initial colour quibble (refer back to number 1). Yes I would love to have more colour in my wardrobe but to single one out for the purpose of this list, I wish I had orange in my wardrobe (hence the orange theme of the above Polyvore ^^^). Not as garish as yellow (yuck!) but still just as cheerful and it makes a delightful colour combination when paired with navy - which is my all-time favourite colour, hands down, forever, amen.
(The chicest thing to peek out from under a chair)

And lastly, as ever, my focus once again turns to the shoes. With the 90's platform still riding high well into S/S15, and the renegade chunky 70's style making appearances everywhere right now, I feel an affinity to it's more streamlined cousin, the stiletto. The only conclusion I can deduce for my lapse in ownership of the most sophisticated of footwear is due purely to the sturdiness afforded of a block heel when wobbling around intoxicated, or, when like me, you're blessed with the grace of Bambi on ice.

I think perusing through the dream wardrobe that is Polyvore has gone to my head a little, but a girl can dream. Who knows, if I wish hard enough, they might actually materialise. (Side note: If this were to happen, I'd like to add the classic Chanel, chain strapped, quilted handbag, in black - not that I'm asking for much or anything...) Until then Polyvore collages will have to suffice!

THE LBD: AN EDUCATION

The little black dress is an item of clothing that unites all women in style. It is the epitome of staple-dom, and a steadfast 'fix-it' item for any and every impromptu fashion dilemma.
The little white dress tried to get a look in over the summer months but the longevity just wasn't there (forget cost per wear, the ratio of concern is 'wear vs wash' - obviously black overrules white in this ongoing rivalry). The ubiquitous LBD was deemed 'a uniform for all women of taste' by Vogue in the 1920's and has since become somewhat of a cult classic with Chanel bringing the LBD to the masses whilst Hollywood embraced it's mysterious/sexy/polished/femme fatale qualities in numerous films (e.g. Holly Golightly's chic LBD and pearl set in Breakfast At Tiffany's & Marilyn Monroe in 'The Asphalt Jungle').
(The iconic image that a million women have tried to emulate)

However, all of this had no effect on the Boyfriend as I tried to convince him of the LBD's necessity to my closet's well-being; plus he'd never heard of 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' - it pained me to type that. Selecting Christmas presents with your loved ones remains a place of contention. They plead for you to 'help them out' and select a few items - 'to make a list' - only for them to  nitpick over everything you've chosen. Your preference doesn't matter. But I thought, "not this time pal!"

Versatility doesn't translate into the male lexicon it would seem. Whether he thought I was exaggerating the potential outfit possibilities of the LBD I'm not sure, but after a quick google search to back up - what he considered to be my postulations - the dress was bought. In spite of this however, he continued to question the place of the LBD in my wardrobe. Did I need it? What shoes would I wear with it? How would I style it? This last one irritated me to breaking point. Was he fishing for further gift ideas? Or was this an affront to my styling capabilities? I couldn't be sure either way.

(Casual dressing down to a T - or should I say, LBD?!)

I can kinda see his lack of understanding. In man land the closest thing to the LBD is erm, clean underwear? In that every man should own at least one but that doesn't necessarily mean that they do. I guess you could say that what the LBD does for female fashion, fresh underwear does for male cleanliness. However, I digress…
(Monroe, exposing her lesser known asset…)

The only resolution I figured, was a show and tell, so I took to polyvore to bring my LBD to life, going from night to day - and hopefully putting this issue to bed. The *intended* lesson here: LBD's rule!

The Day Time Look

Day Time
(Dress: Zara; Jumper: La Garçonne; Jacket: modekungen; Hat: Vans; Sunglasses: Net-A-Porter; Backpack: Mulberry; Shoes: Superga; Necklace: Pink Mascara)

Keeping it casual in neutral colours; offset with warm reds, dark teal suede and layers galore & Nothing says 'off-duty' like a contradictory woolly hat and shades combination.

The Night Time Look

(Dress: Zara; Jacket: Moschino; Heels: Valentino; Clutch: Poppy Lissiman; All Jewellery: House Of Harlow 1960)

Amping it up with a slinky pair of heels and fun accessories - because nothing says 'night on the town' quite like red, orange and green. Are you with me? There's nothing like a colour clash to lift an LBD!

I plan to leave my computer casually lying around in his company; open on this very page and hope that this becomes the catalyst for his indoctrination education into the realm all things fashion - dahling. Will it work? Who knows but my back up plan is to play 'Coco Before Chanel' on repeat while he sleeps and hope that seeps into his subconscious. Watch this space.

WHITE TIME, WHITE PLACE

I'm trying out this thing called saving at the moment. I'm wavering between steadfast stinginess and outright extravagance (a recent panic buy resulted in last minute tickets to see John Bishop - Boyfriend's bday snuck up on me unannounced this year shall we say…) Yes I agree, it's an odd time of year to pack away my pennies but I often find myself in such backwards situations (e.g. dying my hair blonde for Winter). These predicaments are of my own making and I take full responsibility, but God, it sucks sometimes - especially during this festive season. I wouldn't necessarily call it Christmas on a budget, I'm just choosing to forget my purse - a lot.
(Type A: The slouch fit.
Image: Nellie P via Pinterest)

Isn't it weird that as soon as you turn your back on consumerism, the only thing on your mind is buying stuff? And stuff of any variety at that. I am inundated with bags, shoes, jewellery, let's not even start on clothes… I am fully aware that I don't need anything, my propensity for acquiring new stuff is purely materialistic. Despite my childish yearnings, so far the rationalist in me has won out. I turned down what is probably the bargain of the century today when I walked away from a Karl Lagerfeld bag that was discounted from £549.00 to £149.99. I also found a Ralph Lauren red puffa jacket, complete with leopard print collar for £48.00, I tried it on then promptly put it back. Lets just say the speed at which I walked out of the store could have led me to be mistaken for a common place thief. How come this stuff never happens on pay day?
(Type B: The classic cut.
Image: Bacillō via Pinterest)

However, what I find myself completely incapable of leaving behind is a classic white tee. My will power is tested to the point where my resilience is non-existent. To say that I have 'a variety' would be an understatement. My wardrobe is more a curation of the perfect white t-shirt, in all it's many varieties. Yes, they're all white but that's where the similarities end. The fit, the shape, the slouch. Some drape, some dip low, some are oversized, some are fitted - it's a staple for every woman and girl alike - heck even guys look good in them!
(Type C: The oversized/cuff combo.
Image: Fann Weichin)

However, even whilst typing this I'm not sure that I'm even one hundred percent convinced that I really need them all... So when it comes to explaining to the Boyfriend why I broke my 'no shopping' rule merely for the sake of a plain white t-shirt, his confusion is almost palpable and it's contagious. I start to doubt their worth. Do they each deserve a place in the metaphorical wall of fame that is my closet? I pull them out, try them on, dance around. It just feels so right. None of them are in themselves particularly special but the blank canvas possibilities that each offer are truly inspiring. They go with anything, can go with me anywhere, it's the perfect piece - I guess that's why it's a classic ey?

Whether my boyfriend will ever understand this, remains to be seen. Maybe if I bombard him with enough iterations of the timeless staple he'll slowly become indoctrinated? Whatever his proclivities, I will remain resolute in my love affair with the plain white tee. I declare myself indissoluble on this issue, so I'm officially waving my white t-shirt in the face of all those who snub the staple; not as a sign of resignation but of defiance.

Who said that white was bland anyway?!

YOUNG BLOOD AT CHRISTMAS

Young Blood

Young Blood by sophia2a

I've always thought that red and black as a colour combo was a little bit of a  cliche. LBD offset with a crisp red pout, a leather jacket with a scarlet manicure peaking out of the sleeves. Timeless, yes but borderline tired, also yes. Maybe it was just my jaded inspiration of late and the fact that all things Christmas orientated have been shoved in our faces for the last too many months!

I didn't dislike the red/black thing in that I'd never dream of wearing the two together or anything, I just didn't gravitate towards them. And to be honest the above looks grew from the unlikeliest of places: a pair of Minnie Mouse ears. Yes. The infamous bow that sat atop the original Disney diva. Some thing's are timeless and Minnie has proved that a statement head piece is just that. So I figured that I'd rework the classic into something a little bit more, me, and here's what I came up with.

Two outfits, one decidedly more casual than the other. I like the mix of sparkle and slouch, playing with opposites to create (in my opinion) what is one cohesive look. Business up top with a sheer, sequin blouse and functionality down bottom with a pair of leather sports shorts and trainers combo. And I'm really into the idea of tailored culottes paired with some killer booties - note the flourish of colour here to add a bit of whimsy to the sultry black/red palava.

I'm definitely not opposed to wearing a bit of red at this seasonal time of year - though somewhat of a Christmas cliche it's definitely far from a fashion faux par, plus Christmas has a funny kinda way of removing any divide between the upper echelons of fashion's elite and us mere mortals (the uniting power of a tacky Christmas jumper, ey). However, saying this I won't be teaming my crimson ensembles with anything in the vicinity of green. I'd like to avoid being mistaken for a Christmas tree… If you'd like to hear more of my ramblings on Christmas dressing then check out the article I wrote for The Metropolist, 'T'is The Season Of The Unconventional'.

I've just realised how un-Christmassy the title of this post is! Whilst blood and seasons greetings aren't the norm, it's red so I'll run with it.

SEQUINS & FLUFF

Sequins & Fluff

I don't want to over saturate the blog with Polyvores but it really is too addictive - plus my incessant cravings to shop, shop, SHOP, are *slightly* pacified by this virtual 'lets play dress-up' portal. And it really does satisfy my long forgotten collage-obsessed teenage self of yore.

Killer shoes by Sophia Webster, but then again with a name like Sophia her shoes were always going to be stellar… I see shoes as my kryptonite. Sometimes I catch myself wishing for extra feet, so that I could wear more shoes at one time, but then I realise that this is in fact weird and I need to get a grip - or get a slightly healthier addiction (like smelling magic markers), before I get dangerously close to foot fetish territory! (Side note: My penchant for all things fluffy is still rife. See my earlier mentions of all things furry here.)

I'm also thinking that some form of leather-like trouser needs to supplant my staple black jeans. Hmmm… Why is it that Christmas always makes me want to shop for myself. Evidently the first thing I need to invest in is a new moral compass, because mine has obviously gone askew.

Anyone that knows me knows that I love a sequin. Not quite to the extent of the cast of 'Strictly Come Dancing' but not far off. Sequins for day, sequins for night; the only place that I won't do a sequin (weird phrasing there I know but YOLO) is at the gym. I like to sweat without being blinded by the shimmery glare of myself; plus the probability of being mistaken for a disco ball is too high for my ego to take.

A good ol' statement bag finishes off the look because, well, I said so. And I'm also feeling purple lips at the moment. I've yet to try it out but in theory it seems like a good idea. I'm thinking that during a night of Christmas merriment would be a good time to give it a go. Beer goggles make people far more receptive to new things - as I'm sure the statistics of alcohol poisoning and unprotected one-night-stands exemplifies.

Now all I need is an occasion to wear this well executed ensemble. Oh and the bank balance to afford it...

TONIGHT I'M WATCHING… HOUSE OF DVF

(The Legend.
Image via eonline)

Synopsis of the show: So the premise of the show is for the legendary Diane Von Furstenberg to find a brand ambassador for her eponymous fashion line. Sounds simple in theory but in practise it proves to be chaotic…

What To Anticipate: Expect to hear DVF repeatedly doubt her decision to do the show, exclaiming in the first episode: "I was getting dressed, and I was thinking 'Am I crazy?'"  - Oh the drama!

Why It's Worth A Watch: Not since the Whitney Port spinoff show from 'The Hills' has access been granted to the inner workings of the DVF headquarters. If like me,  you've had a hole in your life since the end of 'The City' then this is the show to fill that void and some.

Meet DVF's team of fashion aficionados: Jessica Joffe -former It girl and current DVF style editor - is all icy stare and no nonsense (I <3 her), while Stefani Greenfield, who is SVP of merchandising, is like a terrifying headmistress bent on wrangling the girls into some semblance of DVF-ishness! DVF herself is fiercely passionate about both her brand and the girls, nurturing them with the compassion of a mother - a world away from the stereotypical frosty image of the fashion industry.
(DVF & her gang.

The Downside: It's hard to even imagine that there could be anything even resembling a downside where DVF is concerned but I do question their choice of girls. Out of all the girls in the world (or maybe it's just America) I can't help feeling that the chosen girls were selected mainly for their entertainment value on the show rather than their fashion prowess or particularly moral characters. For example one of the first to go was a girl who intermittently spoke French as a means of alienating the other girls, valued her wardrobe at an astronomical amount (in a bid to show-off?), skyped her boyfriend in the DVF showroom and had an episode that left everyone wondering if she was in fact on drugs! Sound like DVF material to you? Yep, didn't think so. There's a bitch in the group (as labelled by Diane I might add), one thick accented Jersey girl, a couple who talk waaaay too fast and one with an amazing red afro atop her head. Not your typical DVF girl but the company's bid to connect with a new generation is evident and I think it's working.
(Where the magic happens.

The Conclusion: If you're still unsure whether or not to sacrifice sixty minutes of your Tuesday evening, then perhaps the prospect of being enriched by DVF's inspiring, thought-provoking and philosophical musings on life will entice you.

Here's Last Week's Inspirational Quote:

"The success of every single woman is an inspiration for another" DVF

Oh and you can't forget the clothes. One day a DVF wrap dress will be in my possession. Until then, a Polyvore collage of make believe items will have to suffice. Here's my take on transitional styling, from down town kicks to uptown chic - such is the versatility of the wrap dress.

One day it'll be mine. One day.

MY POLYVORE DISCOVERY: INTO THE WILD

Recently I discovered Polyvore - and I'm kinda addicted. It's like playing dress up only your model or, erm, sibling, isn't wriggling to get away. I've always been an avid scrap booker so the prospect of creating an online, interactive collage is very appealing to me.

Polyvore allows you to play virtual dress-up with pieces of clothing ranging from high street to high end couture. Consider it your online version of window shopping, because sometimes it's fun to play pretend.

Here's one I've been working on. From me, this is the ideal night time look: killer heels and a va va va voom skirt. If only I had the bank balance to afford my every fashion fancy… but until then I'll keep playing online dress up!
