HAIRY TIMES

When it comes to hair I'm as clueless as any man who is met with a bobble and the task of somehow fixing it into a ponytail. Needless to say my mother never put me through the trauma of having my dad do my hair, something I am forever grateful for.

Over the years I have steadily managed to master - or at least come to grips with - the art of making oneself up. However, teasing my hair into any semblance of boho-chic-messy-up-do, or surfer girl waves unfortunately alludes me. 'Bush through backwards' and 'birds nest' do however often find themselves atop my bonce.

So what to do when you've been cursed with a complete ineptitude for hair styling? Well I'm not 100% sure but these looks are easy and, as a bonus, are purposely messy. Something I apparently have no problem accomplishing…

The Half-Up, Half-Down

Can't decide what to do with your hair? Put it up? Wear it down? For the indecisive out there, why not have it all and do both? And despite what MK's stern expression might lead you to believe, this do is as easy as Robin Thicke. The two minute 'pin up and go' is a quick fix to a night of free spirited fun. It's essentially the cool girl's mullet, so go ahead and party on like your Billy Ray Cyrus circa the Achy Breaky Heart phase.

The Bubble Bun

There are so many different types of buns out there. Seriously, google it. I like a polished bun but let's be honest, the only time my hair ever looks properly 'done' is when I come out of the hairdressers and even then by the time I reach the car it's as windswept as if I'd just spent the day head banging at a Led Zeppelin concert. Due to this rather tangle-some mane of mine, I tend to opt for a rather messy bun, a 'pile it and pin it' style if you will. Looks effortless. Is effortless.

The Fishtail

It looks intricate but is surprisingly easy peasy. Do it while watching TV or gargling mouthwash or on your morning run. Who would have thought that two sections of hair repeatedly wrapped around each other could look so damn cool. And the best thing is that it looks even better when messed up. The perfect nap and go hairstyle.

The Braids

I feel like an intergalactic warrior with this hairstyle. Make the plaits tight and neat or loose and lived in. Hair feels suffocating in this hot, sticky weather and nothing combats this better than a cool updo. Effortless but totally effective. Don't you agree?

The Polished Pony

I know I said I was all for the messy look but sometimes all you need is a polished pony. Nothing feels better than the silky swish of a well conditioned sleek tail. I love the poof at the crown and the loose pieces casually framing her face, acting to relax this otherwise sophisticated style. Also see the hair wrapped around at the base of the ponytail? Yeah? Well you couldn't do that with a scrunchy. I'm planning on holding a 'Ban The Scrunchy' rally. Nothing good comes from them (see the end of Carrie and Burger's relationship on SATC). Feel free to come along.

The Milkmaid Braid

And just because the Olsen Twins can do no wrong, here's another hair inspo pic, making that a hat-trick for the duo. Two plaits, pulled over the top of the head and pinned at opposite sides. Easy. Leaving you with enough time to fit in the important stuff, like catching up on TOWIE or organising your shoes by heel height, colour and overall wearability (yeah, these are things I've actually felt compelled to do before I leave the house in the morning - it's no wonder I'm constantly late ey.)

And remember, if all else fails, then grab a hat. OR if that's not the helpful advice you were after then try Luxy Hair for some real inspiration and know-how. (Did you know there was such a thing as a six strand plait?! Yeah me either, seriously check it out.)
